Signs You Need New Tyres: Tread Depth, Age & Legal Limits in NSW
Your tyres are the only contact patch between your vehicle and the road. Understand tread depth regulations, tyre age limits, and how uneven wear indicates underlying suspension issues.
NSW Legal Minimum Tread Depth: 1.5mm
Under Transport for NSW regulations, your tyre tread must be at least 1.5mm deep across the entire central three-quarters of the tyre tread width. Driving on tyres below this limit is illegal, unroadworthy, and risks substantial fines and demerit points.
More importantly, wet braking performance deteriorates drastically once tread drops below 3mm. Tread grooves exist to channel surface water away from the contact patch. Shallow grooves cause hydroplaning (aquaplaning), where the tyre floats on water and loses all steering and braking control.
- Tread Wear Indicators (TWIs): Look for small raised bars inside the tread grooves. When the outer rubber wears level with these bars, the tyre has reached the legal limit.
- The 20-Cent Coin Test: Place an Australian 20-cent coin into your tread groove. If the platypus bill is completely visible, your tread is under 3mm and should be replaced soon.
Uneven Tyre Wear Points to Alignment or Suspension Faults
If your tyre tread is wearing unevenly, the tyres are telling you a story about your chassis and alignment:
Wear on Outer or Inner Edge Only: Indicates incorrect camber or toe alignment, often after hitting a pothole or kerb.
Scalloped or Cupped Wear: Dips or scalloped patches along the tread edge are a clear symptom of worn shock absorbers or loose suspension bushes allowing the tyre to bounce uncontrollably.
Mechanical Insight: Simply replacing tyres without correcting wheel alignment or worn suspension components will destroy your new tyres in less than 10,000 kilometres.
Tyre Age: The 5 to 7 Year Rule
Even if a tyre has ample remaining tread (for example, on a spare wheel or caravan), rubber naturally oxidises and hardens over time. Exposure to UV sunlight causes dry rot, visible as tiny hairline cracks along the sidewall and tread valleys.
Check the 4-digit DOT date code stamped on the sidewall (e.g., "2421" means manufactured in week 24 of 2021). Tyres over 5 years old should be inspected annually, and tyres over 7–10 years old should be replaced regardless of remaining tread.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to replace all four tyres at the same time?
While replacing all four is ideal for balanced grip, replacing them in axle pairs (both front or both rear) is completely acceptable. For all-wheel-drive (AWD) vehicles, matching tyre circumference across all four wheels is essential to protect the transfer case.
Can a punctured tyre always be repaired?
Punctures within the central tread area caused by a small nail or screw can typically be safely repaired with a vulcanised mushroom plug. Punctures in the tyre shoulder or sidewall cannot legally be repaired.
